Overview
An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the belly button (umbilicus). This condition is common in both infants and adults.
Causes
- Increased Abdominal Pressure
- Congenital Weakness
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Ascites
Treatments
- Surgical Repair: The primary treatment for an umbilical hernia is surgery. The procedure involves pushing the protruding tissue back into place and repairing the weakened area with stitches or mesh. It can be done via open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
- Hernia Belt: A supportive belt may be used to manage symptoms and provide temporary relief, especially in cases where surgery is not immediately possible. However, it does not treat the hernia itself and is more of a palliative measure.
